NANOWRIMO – Here we go!
The challenge of National Novel Writing Month is about to begin!
Many of you may already be familiar with NANOWRIMO, but for those of you who aren’t, it takes place every November. Many novelists join in the fun and work of trying to crank out as many words as possible in a 30 day period. Traditionally, the goal was to write a 50,000 word novel in the month of November. No mean feat.
Today, NANOWRIMO is a bit more flexible. You can write that 50,000 word novel if you wish, but you can also set other writing goals, and the dates can be flexible. The goal now is to get some words on the page in a way that works for you.
The best part of NANOWRIMO for me the support authors give to each other. I love the writing community, and I love socializing with other authors, even though I’m a huge introvert. NANO gives me the chance to not only push myself, but to cheer others on as they strive for their goals.
This year, I’ll be re-writing the first draft of the second novel in my series set in Renaissance Venice. I’m excited for this book, because I want it to be more of a comedy. The heroine, Francesca, deals with her life by finding humor in the things that cause her stress. Her family is slowing losing both their fortune and their social standing, and she is a drain on their limited resources. They want her to marry, and her grandmother has gone so far as to cast love a powerful love spell to trap a man for her.
Enter our hero, Caspar, the nephew of a wealthy Austrian nobleman. He’s never been to Venice before, but he’s excited for the new experience. After being chased by some dangerous thugs, he meets Francesca and sparks fly.
But Francesca doesn’t want a man who is only in love with her because of her grandmother’s magic, and she just can’t tell if Caspar is genuine.
To complicate matters, Ricardo, a man of little standing, but who is aligned with a wealthy household, has been in love with Francesca since before the love spell. She doesn’t feel the same way, but he is a path to relieve the burden she’s placing on her family.
Poor Francesca. I’ll be spending all of November with her to see what she decides.
